The layout of a horizontally opposed engine means gravity tends to break the oil film at the top of the cylinder liner, increasing the likelihood of direct contact between the piston skirt and cylinder liner. The engine’s overall length (crankshaft) is very short and its crankshaft bearings are narrow, so a stronger oil film is needed.
